Auction Marketplace

Browse, bid on, and enter animals into virtual and real-world time-limited auctions.

What Auctions Are

The Auction Marketplace allows breeders to list animals or breeding services as lots in time-limited bidding events. Auctions can be purely online (virtual) or linked to a recognised auction house event (real-world).

Virtual vs Real-World Auctions

Virtual auctions are conducted entirely within Prized Lines. Bidders place bids online and the lot is awarded to the highest bidder when the auction closes.

Real-world auctions are linked to established auction houses — including Tattersalls, Brightwells, Doncaster Sales, and Elite Stock. These events are associated with a physical sale and Prized Lines acts as a discovery and pre-registration platform alongside the auction house's own systems.

Browsing Auctions

The Auctions page displays events organised into tabs:

  • All: every auction on the platform regardless of status.
  • Live: auctions currently accepting bids.
  • Scheduled: upcoming auctions that have not yet opened.
  • Ended: completed auctions with final results.

Each auction card shows the title, auction house (if applicable), start and end times, and the number of lots.

Placing a Bid

Open a live auction and select a lot to view its current bid, reserve status, and bid history. To place a bid you can use the quick-bid presets:

  • Minimum: the current minimum acceptable bid (current bid + one increment).
  • +1 Step: one bid increment above the current bid.
  • +3 Steps: three bid increments above the current bid.

Alternatively, enter a custom amount in the bid input field. Currency is displayed in the format configured for the auction (£, €, or $). Confirm your bid and it will be recorded immediately.

Subscription Tier Gates

Some auctions require a minimum subscription tier to participate. If you do not meet the required tier, an upgrade prompt will be displayed in place of the bid form. Upgrade your subscription via the Pricing page to gain access.

Entry Fees

Some auction organisers charge a buyer registration fee to participate in an event. This fee is displayed as a badge on the auction detail page. You will be prompted to pay the entry fee before your bids are accepted.

House Commission Fees

Auction houses may charge a per-lot commission to sellers, deducted from the final sale price. Commission rates are disclosed on the auction detail page and in the lot entry form when you submit an animal.

Entering Your Animal as a Lot

To submit an animal as a lot in an upcoming auction, navigate to the auction's Manage page (available to auction organisers and eligible listers). Complete the lot entry form with:

  • Starting Bid: the minimum opening bid.
  • Reserve Price: the minimum price at which the lot will sell. Bids below the reserve result in a "Passed" outcome.
  • Bid Increment: the minimum amount by which each new bid must exceed the previous.

How Auctions Close

When an auction's end time is reached or the organiser manually closes it, each lot is evaluated:

  • Passed: the lot received no bids, or the highest bid was below the reserve price. The lot is not sold.
  • Sold: the highest bid met or exceeded the reserve price. The lot is awarded to the winning bidder.

Organiser Controls

Auction organisers have additional controls:

  • Open: activate an auction to begin accepting bids.
  • Close: end bidding and finalise results.
  • Cancel: cancel the auction entirely. All bids are voided and registered bidders are notified.

Real-Time Updates

Live auctions update automatically without requiring a page refresh. New bids placed by other users appear in the bid history in real time, and the current price updates instantly.
